Our first reading group, hosted by the Social Minds, is now open for participation.

You can find the relevant information below. We are open to every student who wants to participate. Even if you are not a psychology student or are unfamiliar with the topic, you are welcome.

The Topic: “Simplifying Complexity: Cognitive and Computational Perspectives on the Brain”

In our first reading session, we will generally be reading about complexity science and the computational aspects of the brain. After we understand what complexity aMaturanaex systems are and where we observe such systems, we will look closely at the mechanisms our brains rely on, with insights from automata theory and its adaptation by Mitchell. Finally, we will learn the basics of Maturana and Varela’s theory, pioneers in cognitive science, and then we will delve into the philosophical and evolutionary aspects of conscious beings.

Materials for the first reading session can be found in the following drive folder, along with information specifying which pages to read: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1PducNW9GD7jZwOP1Z1HwqFrOuHrTdII0?usp=sharing

The event will be held on December 11, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at AB2 110A (Social Cognition Lab)
